H1N1 in city: Criminals take a break

The H1N1 outbreak may have kept the city on its toes for more than a month now, but here is one good news:

Offences like house break-ins and vehicle thefts have shown considerable decline in the first three weeks of August, ever since the news of the virus outbreak spread in the city.
On the decline in property offences, deputy commissioner of police (crime) Anil Kumbhare said,
"The study has revealed that 39 per cent of vehicles are stolen from housing societies. The house break-in and vehicles thefts have shown a decline as most people now are staying at home instead of going out, due to the swine flu panic. The closure of schools and colleges and business establishments for a few days was also the reason why the crime rate in the first three weeks of August was less."
Another interesting aspect of the study is that the crime rate has declined because criminals coming to Pune from different places had opted not to visit the city as they fear that they might be infected with the HINI virus, Kumbhare added

Swine flu: Follow these 7 steps

Step One:

If you have symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, cold and running nose, consult your family doc. If he says so, visit the nearest designated government testing centre or hospital for a check up. Your risk is higher if you have developed the symptoms after returning from an infected country or have met a person who has tested positive for H1N1.

Step Two:

If it looks like you're one of the unlucky ones, wear a mask while moving out of the house. In case infected, you could spread H1N1 through coughing or sneezing. Private hospitals or labs are still not authorised to test patients for H1N1.

Step Three:

After clinical assessment, the designated medical officer would decide whether the symptoms would require sample collection and testing. The doctor will check you for symptoms of pneumonia, infection of the chest, fever and ask your travel history.

Step Four:

If it's found that you need testing, throat and nasal samples will be collected and you will be asked to go home and stay indoors for seven days. In case the patient looks serious, he will be admitted in the hospital right away, while his samples are tested.

Step Five:

Sample testing will take 24-48 hours. If found positive, the sample is then tested for H1 and swine A virus. Meanwhile, you will be called back and immediately started on treatment of Tamilfu - one tablet twice a day for 5 days. All your contacts will also be traced and checked for symptoms. (Infected people are liable to infect others from the day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or 8 days after becoming sick. In short, you're liable to pass on the flu to someone before you know you are sick. That's why H1N1 is so very infectious).

Step Six:

If you have a mild infection, you would be given the option of admission into the hospital or isolation and treatment at your own house. If you chose the latter, you and your attendant will have to wear a three layer mask at all times, and confine yourself to a room. Obviously, you can't go out or meet guests. Your family members will also be given a prophylaxis course of Tamilfu. Avoid meeting high risk groups in your family like small children, people with heart disease or pregnant women. In case you feel respiratory distress or your nails turn blue, immediately report back to the government hospital.

Step Seven:

After seven days, in hospital or at home, you will de declared fit and discharged if you show no more symptoms. ET

Why Pune is H1N1 Ground Zero

14 deaths in Pune:

Even as the swine flu storm rages through India, Pune is taking the worst battering.

Almost 65% (14 out of 22) of the H1N1 deaths in India have been in the city.

Nor is it looking any better now after the first rash of cases.

Clusters of H1N1 in Pune:

Union health ministry officials fear ‘‘ clusters of H1N1’’ are emerging in the city, which means that large groups of people from certain localities could start getting infected even if they don’t have any travel history.

Why Pune?

The larger question — raised by both officials and ordinary people — about this localized crisis is: why Pune? What went wrong there for the flu infection to virtually spin out of control?

The answer lies in a combination of reasons that includes administrative lapse as well as some climatic features peculiar to Pune.

Contact-tracing program:

According to scientists from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, the state government failed in the early stages to put in place an effective ‘‘contact-tracing programme’ ’ — that is, tracing down each and every person who has come in contact with those who tested positive. Possession Insurance or Life Insurance?

Yes, you won't believe this but it's truth.

Few IT professionals working in Hinjewadi don't enjoy being taken for a ride by smartaXX builder in Pune!

Ride may be Xpress or Super fast, it doesn't matter much to them.

These IT professionals believe in going at their own pace.

They have formed their own housing group insignia_Pune.

However, at this point of time they are discussing less about their 56 flats and 12 Town houses projects on Sus Road.

At insignia_pune housing project the property rate for the flat is Rs. 2,250 per sq.ft. and for the Town House Rs. 2,350 per sq.ft.. The right property price in Pune real estate market!

At these rational real estate prices at insignia_Pune project, the budget of 2 bhk flat is Rs. 24.5 lakhs (approx.) and 3 BHK flat's 32.5 lakhs (approx.) inclusive of all costs!

However, at this point of time, these IT professionals are busy sharing information about Swine Flu than talking about housing. For example, have a look at this slide show:

Sagar Properties' Water Edge at Pimple Nilakh - took less than 40 hours to withdraw from the Property Show '09 at PCMC

Reason: threatening infectious swine flu:

Most of the visitors, property buyers - real estate investors in PCMC and a few real estate salespersons at the stall were wearing masks.

Sagar Properties, promoters of Water Edge, next to Nandanvan, Jagtap Dairy Chowk, Piple Nilakh, Aundh annexe, Pune had provided good quality masks to their staff, a rare example in Pune real estate market.

On Sunday afternoon, they decided to close the stall and withdraw from Property Show '09 at Auto Cluster Institute at Chichwad MIDC, Pimpri.

However, Water Edge left a good impression about their 3 and 4 bhk lavish condominiums with servant room!

FAQ’s on Swine Flu

Thanks to Gaurav Metkar for sharing this:

What are the symptoms of swine flu?

The symptoms are cough, cold, fever, chills and body ache. These symptoms are not unusual in the rainy season, so it is difficult to identify the viral infection. Confirmation of swine flu infection is possible only by testing the fluids in the throat and nose for H1N1.

Is there any way to prevent swine flu?

The virus spreads via the air when the infected person coughs or sneezes. The droplets of fluid resulting from coughing or sneezing can also get deposited on solid surfaces like doorknobs, tables, etc. A person can get infected if he/she happens to touch those surfaces and then touches his/her mouth or nose. The swine fly attacks the respiratory track. You should avoid public contact or use mask when in crowded areas where there is possibility of infection.

Here is a good source of information: www.cdc.gov/ swineflU/

Pune Swine flu information is available at: http://www.indianex press.com/ news/all- about-swine- flu/495447/ 0

In case I have symptoms, where do I get tested for H1N1 in Pune?

You need to meet the doctors at Naidu hospital for examination.

View Naidu Hospital in a larger map

Where is Naidu hospital?

Naidu hospital is located near the Pune railway station. It is next to Hotel Le Meridian next to Raja Bahadur mill. When you go towards Le Meridian from RTO, take a left turn just before Le Meridian hotel and follow the signs.

What procedure do I have to follow at Naidu hospital?

Locate the Quarantine ward at Naidu hospital. It is at ward number 7.
Meet the doctors for counseling. Doctors would guide you through the process.
The doctors decide whether you need to be administered the test or not.
In case you need not be tested, you are free to leave. Read More
