Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans hefty fines for water tax evaders

Pay up to 10 times the amount of your water bill!

Now, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is planning to levy a fine from residents who oppose the installation of meters and
also from those who fail to pay their dues.

PCMC officials have appealed to citizens to approach the ward offices concerned if they have any complaint regarding water bills.

Ajit Pawar seeks survey charting equitable water distribution in Pune

State minister for water resources Ajit Pawar on Friday said that the city's water needs could be fulfilled with 7.5 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) water.

He has instructed elected members and officials of the Pune Municipal Corporation to carry out a detailed survey of the city for equitable water distribution.

Pawar later told media persons that he has asked the officials and the elected representatives to identify an agency within a week to conduct a survey on the current water distribution in the city.

Leaders from all political parties in the civic body along with the mayor agreed that there was no equitable distribution of water in the city. "I was told by the irrigation department officials that 12 to 13 TMC of water is supplied to the city while the civic officials said the city receives around 11 to 12 TMC water. Considering that each Puneite gets 150 litres of water every day, 7.5 TMC water should be sufficient taking into account the present population of the city," he said. Read More: DNA

Water should be supplied for 5.5 hrs at least - Vivek Velankar, civic activist

The PMC and the irrigation department are likely to make a decision about water cuts in the city on Wednesday, but according to civic activist Vivek Velankar, water should be supplied for at least five-and-a-half hours a day.

As per Velankar's calculations, normal water supply to Pune is of about seven to eight hours a day, so even if there is a 20 per cent water cut, water should still be available for 5.5 hours.

Water cut in parts of Pune City

Thursday, October 29:

The following areas will not receive water on Thursday, October 29, due to pipeline repair works to be undertaken at the Warje and Holkar water stations.

The areas are Bhusari colony, Shastrinagar, Bavdhan, Bhugaon road, Balewadi, Pashan, Warje highway area, Karvenagar, Dahanukar colony, Mahatma society, Paud road, Sus road, Baner and Gandhibhavan.

These areas will receive water late and with low pressure on Friday.

Friday, October 30:

Meanwhile, the following areas will face a water cut on Friday, October 30, due to repair work on the Wanowrie main line.

The affected areas are Shantinagar, Ganga Satellite Jagtap chowk area, Satyavihar road, Shivarkar road, SRP II, Wanowrie, Azadnagar.

These areas will receive water late and with low pressure on Saturday.

Faulty pipeline, illegal connections, seepage lead to water cut - Nagrik Chetna Manch Study

Study highlights faults in PMC's water supply system - 20% water is wasted due to the pipeline's improper design:

City-based Nagrik Chetna Manch (NCM) has pulled up the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for imposing a 30% water cut in the city. The NGO claimed it would create hardships for citizens.

The manch had carried out a study a few years ago about the problems in the water supply system in the city. It highlighted serious flaws in the civic body's water supply system that deprived Puneites from getting their share of water.

According to the NGO, the present demand for water has increased to 1,100 TMC everyday.

The PMC lifts water by paying Rs 7.60 for 10,000 litre. Hence, it pays Rs 3,25,800 everyday to the irrigation department.

"The state government had permitted the civic body to use 11.50 TMC water from the dam on the condition that it return 6.50 TMC water to the canal. But since the PMC has failed to do so, it has to pay a fine of Rs six crore from 2004 to 2009. If the PMC had returned the water, the dam level would have never depleted and Puneites would not have faced the water cut," the NGO claimed.

Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to face water cuts from tomorrow, 16th August '09

With dams supplying drinking water drying up, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations have decided to impose 30% and 20% water cuts from Sunday respectively.
