Tall structures right remedy for Indian cities

I completely agree with Antony Wood! "A Flat in high rise building and using public transport" is The Only Way to Live in the city! What say you?
With the intention of promoting tall buildings as the right solution to the increasing levels of urbanization in the country, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is set to open its India office early next year.

Antony Wood, executive director of the Council told media persons on Thursday that the council will work as an organization which will try and create public opinion mainly by holding technical sessions, seminars and meetings in favor of tall structures as the right remedy for the congestion faced by India's urban centers.

"The policy to promote tall structures will have to be part of a holistic plan for the development of a city as there are many issues of infrastructure and safety associated with the height of buildings," Wood said.

Urbanization is inevitable as about 2,00,000 people move towards urban centers every day, Wood said, adding that at this rate, the existing cities will crumble under the weight of population. The present method of horizontal expansion of cities is going to create major problem of distribution of resources such as water and transport, he said.

"Road widening is not the best remedy to decongestant roads, as some day even the widest roads will prove inadequate to cope with the influx. There is a need to go vertical and create a non-car based system of urban mass transport," he noted.

  1. Hi Ravi:
    Nice blog.
No high rise permission should be given for inner city. Only in peripheral area which have good roads. First the city should develop good wide roads on these upcoming areas and then give high rise permission. I will go one step further... give 3 to 5 FSI on far areas about 25-30 km from corporation building. Make sure the city provides wide roads and mandate the builders to give mass transportation from his complex to the city.

High rise bldg also leaves lots of ground for green coverage but on the flip side how about parking spots?
