City-based organization Pedestrians' First strongly opposes the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) plan to build 25 subways, foot over bridges (FOBs) and sky walks, calling instead for the introduction of properly-designed road-level pedestrian crossings. It has written to municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade pointing out that citizens must be taken into confidence before such projects are embarked upon. It has suggested that at-grade (road-level) pedestrian crossings are a more convenient and cheaper option.
Suggesting alternatives for making it convenient for pedestrians to cross roads, Prashant Inamdar, the organization's convener, has said that the PMC should make it a policy to introduce properly-designed road-level pedestrian crossings.
"These are a far cheaper option than FOBs or subways.When contacted, a senior civic official said the PMC would invite suggestions and objections from citizens to the plans, after which all the points will be taken into consideration.
Pedestrian crossings at road junctions with traffic and pedestrian signals as well as pedestrian refuges at appropriate intervals should be introduced as per vehicle movement and crossing distance.
A sufficient timing phase should be provided in the traffic signal cycle to allow even senior citizens to cross safely.
Most importantly, suitable enforcement measures should be taken to ensure that vehicles honor the zebra crossings and pedestrian signals," he said.
