Green Pune Project - Pune Municipal Corporation to plant saplings on public, private land

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will launch a project, titled Green Pune, to encourage individuals, registered housing societies, public institutions, private schools and colleges to take up tree planting, in a bid to increase green cover in the city.

The civic body will take up plantation of saplings on open plots owned by public institutions, semi-government institutions, societies and private schools and colleges. In return, the institutions or the owner of the land will have to protect the saplings and nurture them for at least three years till they are grown.

Bhanudas Mane, head of the garden department, PMC, told TOI that the department, in collaboration with the Samartha Bharat Vyaspeeth (India Development Council) will take up plantation on vacant plots owned by individuals or societies, provided they are registered. The owner will have to give, in writing, assuring maintenance and protection of plants for three years. The project will be launched on June 5.

"A follow up will be carried out after planting of saplings. There has to be 80 per cent survival rate of the saplings. If we see that the saplings are not maintained properly, we will recover the amount spent on plantation from the owner," he said.

The PMC will provide the saplings and plant them. In case an institution or an owner wants to take up tree planting on their own, their PMC will provide them the saplings. Trees will be planted depending on the area available. For example in one acre land, around 150-200 saplings can be planted, Mane stated.

In a couple of days, the PMC will issue an appeal to public institutions, individuals, societies, other institutions to participate in the drive and inform the civic body about vacant plots available for plantation. The idea is to increase the green cover in the city, Mane added.

Pune has about 2,000 hectare of forest cover within the PMC limit. The city has about 218 hectare land owned by the revenue department available for developing the biodiversity park, 303 hectare forest area allocated for the joint forest management project and 30 acre from the irrigation department.

Vaibhav Ghone, programme coordinator of the Samartha Bharat Vyaspeeth and the tree plantation drive, said, "Besides working with the PMC, we will also coordinate with other NGOs, private schools, colleges and registered housing societies. We have already received queries from several land owners and institutions," he said.
