Instead of increasing property tax, included all properties in PMC's tax net

After octroi, property tax is an important revenue source of Pune Municipal Corporation

"The PMC administration should make an effort to increase the tax net.

About 40,000 to 45,000 properties in the city are out of the PMC's tax net. Once these properties are taxed, the civic body will get an additional revenue of Rs 100-150 crore.

Standing committee has asked the municipal commissioner to provide reasons for not assessing all properties in the city.

If the civic administration succeeded in increasing its tax collection efficiency, there would be no need to increase civic taxes," standing committee member Ujwal Keskar.

Tax department's plan to widen net

The PMC's tax collection and assessment department has submitted a plan to the standing committee in order to widen the property tax net in 2010-2011.

"After octroi, property tax is an important revenue source of the municipal corporation. Additional revenue collection will help pay for development works. In 2010-2011 we will launch a drive to identify all properties in the city with the help of an independent agency, for which tenders will be invited," said Vilas Kanade, head of the tax collection and assessment department, in a letter submitted to the standing committee on January 25, 2010.

The department has proposed that digital pictures of all properties in the city be taken for record and an aluminium plate fixed on each property with the property number and other details.

The department has proposed that all information of properties in Pune will be recorded at the PMC office.
