Metropolitan Planning Committee for Pune region by March

For claiming funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) it is compulsory for state governments to form Metropolitan Planning Committees (MPCs) for cities with a population of 30 lakh.

As per the 74th constitutional amendment, the MPCs are expected to prepare and forward the development plan to the government.

The Pune metropolitan region, established in 1967, includes areas under the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations, Khadki and Dehu road cantonments and fringe areas of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

This is a major step towards formation of the much-awaited Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pune divisional commissioner Nitin Kareer said.
