It was not the kind of ‘independence’ Gandhiji wanted, he was in mourning.

When India rejoiced at the freedom from the Raj, bringing out rallies and processions, the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was in Kolkata spending the first Independence Day at Hyderi Manzil, a house in Beliaghata that is now called Gandhi Bhavan. He was sad because it was not the kind of ‘independence’ he wanted.
